Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian sustained a leg injury after an Israeli airstrike targeted a high-level meeting of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council in western Tehran on June 16, according to a report from the IRGC-affiliated Fars News Agency.
The attack reportedly took place during a sensitive security session held in the lower floors of a government building in Tehran’s Shahrak-e Bagheri district. Among those attending were President Pezeshkian, Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Judiciary Chief Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei, and other senior officials.
Fars said six bombs or missiles struck the building’s entrances and exits in a deliberate attempt to block escape routes and hinder ventilation. The method was described as being modeled after a failed Israeli operation to assassinate Hezbollah Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah in Beirut.
Despite the precision of the strike and the brief power outage that followed, Iranian officials reportedly escaped through a pre-installed emergency hatch. Several—including President Pezeshkian—suffered minor leg injuries while evacuating.
The report noted the high accuracy of the attack, raising suspicions of an internal leak. Authorities are currently investigating the possibility of an infiltrator within the government.
A few days earlier, senior IRGC figure Mohsen Rezaei acknowledged on state television that Israel “struck six points” at the location of the meeting, but insisted “not the slightest harm was done to any of its members.”
President Pezeshkian later confirmed the assassination attempt in an interview with U.S. media, stating, “They did try, yes… They acted accordingly, but they failed
