A British couple detained in Iran since January were abruptly brought before a Tehran court on Wednesday without advance notice or access to a lawyer of their choice, according to their family.
Lindsay and Craig Foreman, from East Sussex, were arrested while traveling through Iran on a motorcycle world tour and later charged with espionage — accusations they strongly deny. Their son, Joe Bennett, told Sky News that his parents were given a state-appointed lawyer whom they had just met.
“We cannot see how this could be considered a fair trial,” Bennett said, criticizing the opaque process.
Craig Foreman has been held in Evin Prison for 25 days with no funds or hygiene supplies, raising further concerns about his health. The British ambassador had been scheduled to visit him, but the family believes the meeting was canceled because Craig had already been taken to court.
Lindsay Foreman, however, was seen by the ambassador and received essential items.
“The lack of transparency only deepens our concern,” Bennett added. “Craig has already lost weight, and with only the bare minimum of food, we can only guess at his condition.”
