US President Donald Trump on Monday sharply criticized the Islamic Republic’s violent suppression of protests but stopped short of explicitly calling for regime change, even as demonstrators across Iran demanded a new ruling system.
Speaking in Florida alongside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Trump accused Iranian authorities of routinely using lethal force against protesters.
“They kill people,” Trump said at Mar-a-Lago. “Every time they have a riot, or somebody forms a group, little or big, they start shooting people.”
His remarks came as widespread demonstrations erupted across Iran over the weekend, marking one of the most significant waves of unrest in recent years. Merchants across the country joined the protests, vowing to continue their shutdowns into a third consecutive day on Tuesday, underscoring growing economic and political frustration with the ruling system.
