Former German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said that the roots of Iran’s ongoing crisis go back to the overthrow of its democratic government by Britain and the United States. He explained that the two powers replaced an elected government with a dictator the Shah who was later overthrown by the current rulers, leading to the establishment of what he described as a brutal dictatorship, far from the hopes many had at the time.
Scholz added that had Iran’s democratic government not been toppled in the first place to serve oil interests, the country could today have been a highly successful Western-style state.
