A Revolutionary Court in Tehran has sentenced seven protesters, including a 19-year-old, to death over allegations they set fire to a Basij base during nationwide protests in January.
The verdicts were issued on February 6. Mohammad Amin Biglari, 19, and six other men were convicted of arson of public property, “corruption on earth,” collusion against national security, and “enmity against God.” The other defendants are Shahin Vahedparast Kalur, Shahab Zohdi, Abolfazl Salehi Siavashani, Amirhossein Hatami, Yaser Rajaeifar, and Ali Fahim.
Their lawyer said the defendants were tried jointly and received the maximum punishment, adding that he was denied access to the case file and that alleged confessions were unclear.
State media previously aired televised confessions in which detainees denied setting the building on fire, saying they were trapped inside after others ignited the entrance.
The charges relate to a January 7 fire at the Kaveh Basij Base in eastern Tehran. Authorities have said thousands of indictments have been issued in connection with arrests during the January protests.
