Iranian political prisoner Babak Shahbazi faces imminent execution after the Supreme Court upheld his death sentence, according to the Norway-based human rights group Hengaw. Shahbazi, a father of two, was accused of “spying for Israel” and “corruption on earth” in a trial Hengaw described as grossly unfair, relying on forced confessions obtained under severe torture.
Hengaw reported that part of the evidence presented against him included casual conversations with friends some of whom were also allegedly tortured into implicating him. The organization said the proceedings were marked by contradictions and a lack of credible evidence. Iranian authorities have not commented on the allegations.
