Sweden announced on Wednesday that one of its nationals has been detained in Iran, responding to inquiries from Iran International, after Iranian judicial authorities revealed details of a case involving an Iranian-Swedish dual national accused of spying for Israel.
In a written statement, Sweden’s Foreign Ministry said its embassy in Tehran and the ministry are in contact with the detainee’s family and confirmed that the individual has access to a lawyer. The ministry added that no further details could be shared for consular reasons and to avoid interfering with the judicial process.
Iranian judiciary spokesperson Asghar Jahangir said on Tuesday that the case is being handled in Alborz province by the second branch of the Islamic Revolutionary Court, noting that a verdict is expected soon.
According to Jahangir, the defendant was recruited by Israeli intelligence services in 2023. He said the suspect, identified only as a Swedish citizen since 2020, later traveled to six European capitals to receive espionage training, made several trips to Israel, and entered Iran about a month before the recent war, staying in a villa near Karaj. Jahangir added that electronic surveillance equipment was discovered during the conflict and that the defendant had confessed to spying for Israel.
