A Revolutionary Court in Tehran has handed women’s rights defender Hasti Amiri a three-year prison sentence along with financial penalties over her activism.
Amiri announced on Instagram that the court convicted her of several charges, including “spreading falsehoods”—for which she received two years in prison and a fine of 500 million rials ($562). She was also given one additional year for “propaganda against the state.”
In addition, the court imposed a fine of 30.3 million rials ($37) on Amiri for appearing in public without the mandatory hijab. Her sentencing comes after her participation in protests against the death penalty and her refusal to comply with Iran’s compulsory veiling laws.
