The British website UK Defense Journal, citing location data available through user account features on the platform X, reported that several prominent accounts supporting Scottish independence which present themselves as Scottish activists are in fact operated from within Iran.
According to the report, some of these accounts briefly supported the Iranian government during the 12-day conflict with Israel. However, when Iran imposed widespread internet shutdowns during the war, activity on these accounts simultaneously ceased.
Over the past months, the website monitored a number of accounts linked to this network, and the new data from X confirms organized and coordinated behavior among them.
The UK Defense Journal notes that these accounts often use Scottish imagery, local phrases, and cultural references to appear authentic. Investigations, however, indicate that their primary purpose is to promote Iranian regime propaganda.
In recent years, Iran has increasingly sought to influence public opinion on social media, allocating substantial budgets to its so-called “electronic army.” This structure not only functions as a propaganda arm of the regime but also plays an active role in producing and spreading large volumes of misleading information.
